Brazilian telecoms operators generated revenues of 2.4bn reais (US$1.2bn) last year in SMS traffic, newspaper O Estado de S Paulo reported Eduardo Tude, president of telecoms research specialists Teleco, as saying.
Brazil's 103mn mobile phone users sent on average six messages per handset compared to 70 in more mature markets last year, Tude said.
In order to boost SMS traffic, Brazil's third largest mobile phone company Claro last week cut the cost of sending an SMS by 20% to 0.30 reais (US$0.15), the lowest price among national operators.
In Peru a SMS costs on average US$0.08 and in Colombia US$0,06, the newspaper reported.
Claro believes its SMS traffic could increase by more than 20% as a result of the price reduction, the company's value added services director Marco Quatorze told BNamericas last week.
